Comcast’s Xfinity system ‘does not constitute a security system’ and therefore the company is free to operate without a license or permit for its security work.

The Attorney General's decision states that Comcast Xfinity does not fall under the regulations of normal security system installations.

Wi-Fi uses radio frequency to connect wirelessly, so you have the freedom to connect computers anywhere in your home or offce network. Some of my friends who own a wireless router at home always ask me how they could assign wireless security, because they are thinking that somebody near their house will connect to their network. The biggest part of setting up a home security system is often installing sensors and cameras. Sensors “talk” to a central hub using smart home protocol such as Zigbee or Z-Wave. With DIY installation, you have the option of using an adhesive to attach the sensors to your door frames, window frames, and near entry points to your home. On Wednesday, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey overturned a cease and desist order against Comcast stemming from a 2012 lawsuit backed by the Electrical Board that had kept the company from installing security systems in two towns in Massachusetts.

The ruling states Comcast’s Xfinity system “does not constitute a security system” and the company is free to continue operating in those areas without obtaining a license or permit for its security work.

According to a source with knowledge of the legal proceedings, two electrical inspectors — one in Andover, Mass., the other in Amesbury — filed the cease and desist orders for those areas back in 2012, which was upheld by the Electrical Board.

Comcast then appealed the lawsuit. The Massachusetts Systems Contractors Association (MSCA) suspended the lawsuit based on the Electrical Board’s decision, leaving it in the hands of the Attorney General, the source said.

The Attorney General’s decision overturns the Electrical Board’s decision, stating that Comcast’s Xfinity system does not fall under the regulations of normal security system installation. Comcast is now free to operate as it normally would have without a license or permit.
